HDMI port query
My 8 year old flat screen TV doesn't have an HDMI port. Is there a convertor/adaptor I can buy to enable me to connect my new Apple TV

Yes, a simple search will give you several options. Of course you will lose HD quality but also ask in the store about HDCP, if your adapter and cable do not support this then you will have problems with a lot of purchased content.
