I must have changed a setting by mistake.
Now, after a period of dormancy, my computer shuts down all apps and logs off.
How can I stop it from doing that?
I've tried to retrace any recent steps in the Preferences, but to no avail.

Open the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences and turn that option off.

Niel, thanks for putting me on the right track. I had to go to the "advanced" section of the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences to find that option. I had almost given up searching the 4 tabs on the main page in vain.
But I found it and it's turned off

thank you both! somehow I never tried the "advance" part before either! btw that changed by itself when I upgraded to Yosemite and then to El Capitan
