Speedtouch USB modem - seizing

I've just moved house and got broadband and we've been sent a USB speedtouch modem. The connection at times is fine like now, however on far too many occasions it seems to seize up. Internet connect seems to think it's connected as does the tinpot software that came with the modem. However to reconnect takes either hammering the 'disconnect' button or a complete restart.

I've checked the connection on a peecee and it has no such problems. I spoke to my ISP who said it's a common problem for macs and for me to get in touch with apple for an update. However I can't seem to find one.

Does anyone have any ideas? other than shelling out for a router?

Try contacting your service provider and get them to change the modem. I just changed ISP and was sent a Speedtouch 516 which is non USB.
Or forget the USB cable and just use the Ethernet and DSL cables to connect. Use PPOE in the Network set up. You will need to getconnection detals from your ISP. My old Speedstream had all 3 connections possible but I only ever used the Ethernet and DSL.
