Searching for a codec. It's fourcc 'IV50'.

When I try to use QuickTime player to watch certain .avi files that were created with a webcam on a Windows PC; the sound works, but the video doesn't.

Screen capture of QuickTime player> http://img506.imageshack.us/img506/7920/screenshot12qo.jpg

When I try to view the same file using VLC Player; it errors and says what codec is missing.

Screen capture of VLC Player error> http://img506.imageshack.us/img506/5364/screenshot24bq.jpg

I searched for it on Google and found some websites, but no actual codec that is used for playing 'IV50' with QuickTime [7] using OS X.

I'm going to keep looking, but does anyone know where I can find the codec fourcc 'IV50', preferably for free?

Please help.

You can find links to the OS9 Indeo codecs on the page that Dick linked to;
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30506

Look for the OS9 System Folder in the Root level of your Hard Drive.
As per the instructions;
To install Intel Indeo Video 3.2, follow these steps:
1. Drag the file named "Indeo Video 3" to the System Folder on your hard disk.
2. Click OK in the dialog box that appears stating that the driver needs to be stored in the Extensions folder.
3. Restart your computer (restart classic)

Or you can just drag and drop the codec to the Extensions Folder located inside the System folder.

I have the three Codecs installed with QT Pro 6.03 (OS9) and they work fine running from classic, you do not need to boot into OS9 for QT 6.03 to run.

BC? Isn't that in Canada? I live on the Suncoast of Florida. You have a Suncoast in Canada? 😉

Well, the last version of QT for OS9 was 6.0.3. You can only use QT for OS9, in OS9/Classic. A quick search turns up a 6.0.3 updater. You might have to reinstall QT from your system disc, then run the updater. Or you could try searching some more...
QuickTime 6.0.3 Updater

OK I saw your pictures. You need to take the QT Player back out of the QT Extensions folder. It belongs in a folder called QuickTime which is usually in a folder called "Applications (Mac OS 9)". But I guess Classic Apps is close enough....Unless you run the updater, which will create a Folder called Applications (Mac OS 9) with QT inside. ;-(

The following files belong in the Extensions folder;

QuickTime FireWire DV Enabler
QuickTime FireWire DV Support
QuickTime™
QuickTime™ MPEG Extension
QuickTime™ Musical Instruments
QuickTime™ PowerPlug
QuickTime™ VR

These files are in my QuickTime Extensions folder;

3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OS9
KinomaExporter.component
MP3 Exporter
QuickTime Internet Extras
PSI_V.component
QuickTime Authoring
QuickTime Capture
QuickTime Effects
QuickTime Essentials
QuickTime Firewire DV
QuickTime Image
QuickTime Java Extras
QuickTime MPEG4 Authoring
QuickTime MPEG4
QuickTime Music
QuickTime Player Extras
QuickTime QD3D
QuickTime Streaming
QuickTime Streaming Authoring
QuickTime Streaming Broadcast
QuickTime Streaming Extras
QuickTime VR Authoring
QuickTime Web Helper
WMA Audio

And I hope you have QT Pro for OS9. You need QT Pro to convert those Indeos to something OSX can use....
😉

I meant, did you formerly, or previously live on the Suncoast in BC?

As for Classic, the QuickTime folder is empty; there's no QuickTime application> http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7272/screenshot11gx.jpg

This is a screen capture of the Classic System folder, and all of the main folders that it contains. The QuickTime Video 44.avi file is an Indeo Codec Webcam video clip that I dragged in there after restarting the computer with the new codecs in the Classic System Extensions folder> http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8962/screenshot20db.jpg

So, suggestions on where and how to get, then install a working QuickTime application for Classic?

Where do I download it? What version should I download? Will QuickTime 7 work in Classic? Where do I drag a QuickTime application to in the Classic System folder? How do I make sure that it works?

Thanks for the assistance.

Okay, I did a Spotlight search for all QuickTime applications on the computer, and found a QuickTime 6.0.3 version. According to the information box, it is currently located in Classic's Applications> http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/6489/screenshot17yb.jpg

However, I can not find it anywhere that I've looked. And I also did a search with the search tab, in the entire Classic System folder, which returned this> http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/8898/screenshot38gy.jpg The highlighted QuickTime player is version 6.0.3, that I dragged into the QuickTime Extensions folder, from the information box that I opened during my Spotlight search for all QuickTime applications on the computer. It does not offer any findable/usable QuickTime player, and there is still no QuickTime application registering in the QuickTime folder.

I'm frustrated lol

Please help.

Those missing QT extensions are extras that you can live without. I was in a hurry trying to beat the editing deadline. However, the 3ivx codec is probably the best codec to use in OS9, so you might want to install it if you plan on doing any exporting.

I would run the 6.0.3 Updater just in case anything else is missing. And the QuickTime Player is the App you use to open the videos. Run the updater and give it a shot.

It's still not working, Tom.

Hmmm.

I couldn't find the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder in the Classic System folder, so I did a Spotlight search -- found it, but according to its information box, it didn't have a location anywhere on the computer; only 1 forward slash "/" but no other description of its location> http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9633/screenshot10rn.jpg

I dragged the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder from the Spotlight results into the Classic System folder -- which made a copy of the folder -- but still nothing; no QuickTime player application registering in the Classic QuickTime folder> http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7272/screenshot11gx.jpg

And a new Spotlight search only shows 1 Applications (Mac OS 9) folder on the computer -- which may be because Spotlight might only read the OS X part of the computer, and not anything inside the Classic System folder> http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/9439/screenshot27xr.jpg

Actually, after having just looked at that Spotlight picture, I see that the only Applications (Mac OS 9) folder is the one in the Classic System folder. I am guessing that wherever it was in the OS X part of the computer when I did the original Spotlight search to find it, when I dragged it to the Classic System folder, it only copied itself into the Classic System folder, but didn't actually create a second, new additional folder.

Still, any suggestions?

At this point, I'm asking myself why you keep moving things to inside the System Folder. The Applications (Mac OS 9) folder belongs at the root level of the HD. That's where it was before you moved it into the System Folder. Inside the Applications (Mac OS9) folder there should be a folder called QuickTime. Inside of the QuickTime folder should be the QuickTime Player which you previously moved into the System Folder, for some reason.

It sounds like someone has been rearranging files on a whim. I would recommend running the QT 6.03 update to insure that all the necessary QT files are present. The Updater is going to expect the QuickTime Player to be in it's default location which is why I described the default location of the QuickTime Player.

Just install the QT Update, if it can't find the files in their default location it will probably just create new ones in their default location. Once that's done just drop the Indeo movie onto the QuickTime Player. You do not need to move anything into the System Folder, except the Three Indeo Codecs you were suppose to install at the beginning of all this....

I was tired when I did that lol. I just looked and there is still the original Applications (Mac OS 9) folder where it's suppose to be. I'll erase the one that I dragged into the OS 9 System folder. I apologize for any confusion or annoyance that what I wrote may have caused. I am not trying to waste your time, and I haven't been throwing folders and files around wherever I've felt like. I've been following your instructions.

I just ran the updater, opened QuickTime 6.0.3 and I am now able to watch Indeo video!

Thank you very much for your quick, detailed responses and instructions, Tom.

It appears that since I previously awarded Mr. Napoli with the Solved points -- even though I changed this thread back to unanswered -- I can now only award you with the Helpful points 😟

Maybe when I award you with the Helpful points, you'll still be awarded with full Solved points, since this thread had been changed back to unanswered.

Here, since it only awarded you the helpful points, I'm going to make a new thread in the QuickTime forum. Answer with anything and I'll award you with Solved points. If anyone at Apple doesn't like that, they can go fix the Apple Support Forums so that members can properly re-award Solved points, since that feature currently doesn't work properly lol.
