Does this mean that if a few days ago (6/19 per "installed updates" in Sys Prefs) I installed the new Java update via Software Update I got a corrupted or "bad" version?
You got a version with a bug that was missed.
I've noticed no problems but seldom turn Java on.
I ran the terminal script and it came up not finding anything. Does that suggest an issue?
It suggests you didn't have Java enabled in Java Preferences (use Spotlight)
If your not using Java then it's no bother, but it might do to have the bug free version in case you want to run software like the free LibreOffice that does rely upon Java to work.
Just make sure Java is turned off in your browsers, that way a malicious website can't use it.
Should I download and reinstall, or is that safe?
If your on 10.6.8 you should install the Java update here that will fix the bug issue if you ever need to use Java.
