When I connect my iphone to my pc i get the message that i need to go to itunes.com to update the software, but cant figure out how to update once at the website.

The message you are getting about Updating iTunes is referring to iTunes on your Computer... Not your iPhone.

You do not update iTunes on the phone. What your are probably referring to is updating the iOS on the phone. Just to make sure, what is being displayed on the home screen of your device? If you go to Settings, General, About, what version of iOS software do you have? Is there a number in Settings, General, Software Update? If that is correct, then the update the phone is looking for is an update to the iOS. Connect the phone to iTunes and the computer, from teh Summary page, click on "Check for Updates".
