Trash Won't Get Rid of Doc

I downloaded a word document, copied and pasted text, then put the doc in the trash. It refuses to delete it because it claims it's 'still in use'. I've tried dragging it back out of the Trash and putting it back in, and it still refuses. The document isn't open anywhere.....what can I do??
