battery dies due to no data plan

I am currently using my iphone 5 with tmobile. however i do not have a data plan. because there is no data plan my phone is dying at a rapid pace. i know that turning off my cellular data completely eliminates the issue of my battery dying so fast. but the problem is that when i do this i no longer am able to recieve mms, which is very irritating. everytime i want to use mms i would have to turn my cellular data back on...but i have no idea when someone is going to send me a mms so i have to constantly turn it off n on to check....so the delimma is how can i turn off the cellular data to refrain from draining the battery while allowing me to still receive my mms...is there any way yet? thank you for your time....
