external optical drive

I am thinking about buying a mac mini and wonder if could use the optical drive on my mac book pro as the external optical drive if needed to burn dvd's?

Not directly.

Of course you could always copy the file over to your MacBook Pro and burn your DVD that way.

Personally, I much prefer the Mac Pro over the Mac mini (I own and use both). The expandability and serviceability of the Mac Pro is wonderful. Additionally, you can get it with 2 built-in optical drives.

Most any USB Optical Drive will work with the Mac's.

If your really serious about importing your CD collection and burning CDs and DVDs, then a tray loading desktop optical drive is far better than any portable slim SuperDrive.

Many including myself have have very good results with the LG GE24NU20 and LG GE24NU30 desktop drives.

Other good choices include LaCie's and OWC Mercury Pro's
