To address your first question, there is a Requests button when you are in the Friends view.
Take a look at this image from http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/find-my-friends.html
All the best,
Sterling

Jun 28, 2013 1:05 PM in response to Jamesray2by randers4,For your second question, Find My Friends identifies people by their Apple ID. If you are both sharing the same ID you will be identified as the same person (which is why it warned you that you can't send a message to yourself). If you want to share the same primary iCloud account, you can set up a secondary iCloud account on one of the devices by going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCloud and entering a different Apple ID. It is not necessary to turn on any data syncing with this secondary account. Once this account is created, you use secondary account ID for identifying this phone in Find My Friends.
