How to switch off autocorrect

Dear People,

i am goin´ insane. I´m not a 100% sure, but i think it has something to do with the last update:

I have the latest Snow Leopard Version running (10.6.8, there is no update available, sais my mac) and my Mac starts to autocorrect me in for example Skype, but also other programs.

How can I switch this off, i am not able to find anything about this in the internet. There is the possibility to switch this off in OS X Lion,

but this option is missing so far in Snow Leopard. (Or it is somewhere hidden and I can´t find it)

Thank you so much for your support

Yeah it's everywhere, but what's also in every application on OSX is the Edit menu where you have Spelling and Grammar options.

Another suggestion of mine would be to click on the Help menu of the specific App you have the problem in and type in the search bar "auto" or "spelling" or "correct" or something related. Then the option should show up as a menu item.

It's the glory of OSX Help.

We are listening! 🙂

But Mr_Patrick (and this forum) are talking about 10.6, and you are talking about 10.9, issued 4 years later. They are very different. The 10.9 forum is at

I'm glad you found your way to the universal setting (if I may call that), the previous suggestions were about the setting in specific applications, because it's common to leave the feature on in apps like Mail, where you actually want to get corrections, especially when writing formal e-mails (for the non-native british/americans, such as myself.) 🙂

Ideally deleted? I signed up just to respond and say thats absurd. Deleting a post like that would have removed the chain of events that lead to a proper answer including the discussion explaining the difference between two major versions of OSx. And this was the most accurate link I found in Google answering my question. Might have been different had I realized there even IS a difference of that type between the two major versions. This type of post documents clearly for the community who may have spent their time trying to find the answer to a 10.9 question on a 10.6 forum out of lack of understanding of the difference. Illustrated by the original poster in question.

Please don't ever delete a logical chain of answers like this. Even when misplaced. You can't convince me you need to save the disk space or something. And the results are just as valuable as anything else related to 10.6.

The original poster was trying to find the answer to a 10.6 question in a 10.6 forum and got the wrong answer from GJD00, who also disparaged the people giving the right answer. But not to worry, wrong answers are never actually deleted here.
