where are the preferences files?
I want to update my preferences for Adobe Illustrator but I can't find the preference file folder. All there is is one called PreferencePanes, which isn't what I want.

Normally, OS X stores preference files in ~/Library/Preferences, being ~ your user folder. To access to that folder, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type the directory above. Then, search for Illustrator. Also, search in /Library.
Why do you want to update the Illustrator settings manually?
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
