Hello
I would like to use my 5.1 Sony speakers with my 2011 imac to have movies play with surround sound. Does anyone know how I can do this? Thanks.

You need an optic audio cable with 3.5mm headphone attachments on the iMac side. Presumbly (and you can check by looking at the back of your unit) you have the Digital Audio input option on your surround sound system.
When you plug the 3.5mm attachment into the headphone jack of the iMac, the iMac's headphone port will kick into optical mode and you may see a red light from the attachment / end of the optic cable. Plug the other end into the surround system and set it to the digital input setting. You will be good to go, aside from adjusting the volume of everything.
Thanks for reply, and I'll check out the cable. I would prefer not to use the surround sound system box i.e the DVD player, so presumably I need to find a magic box of some kind to replace it, and connect the optic audio cable and the speakers. Have I got that right, and, if so, can you suggest a 'magic box'? Thanks again.
Stephen.
