Apple TV starts and then quits as soon as we try to watch something - even a preview

We use the iPad and the TV remote - it just can't sustain the connection even though it starts out fine - why is it quitting as soon as it has to access content? It doesn't matter if what we want to watch been purchased or we try to rent or if we try to access something like Netflix. It won't stay connected.
