1st generation ipod mini won't connect to itunes 11.0.2

I have an ipod mini from the first generation I believe. It works just fine and I have a bunch of songs on it. I wanted to sync it to a new computer I got and it has itunes 11 on it. When I connect my ipod to the computer the ipod charges, and it appears on my itunes. Shortly after however it just disappers and I can't access it. Is there a reason for this?
