well mine takes a second. I have had to open it once or twice. Most of the time, I plug up the power supply, firewire cable for my sound card, and thunderbolt cable. Then I hit random keys on the keyboard for about 10 seconds while clicking the mouse. And it comes on.

No, but it won't hurt it. If it's in sleep mode. All hitting the keyboard does is activate the bluetooth on the keyboard, and then hitting a key wakes it up, i go ahead and click the mouse too because sometimes my keyboard wont want to bluetooth connect. If you've got it turned off, you'll have to open it to turn it on.

i have a MBP Retina 15" late 2013, Maverick 10.9.3, and the above method doesn't work.

1. Go to - 'System Preferences' - 'Energy Saver' and click the 'Schedule' button (bottom right).

DONE

2. Set the mac to wake before you plan to use it (mine is set for 6am).

DONE (set for 8am)

3. After you shutdown at night, turn the power supply off / remove power cable to your macbook.

DONE (at 9pm)

- The macbook is designed not to turn itself on automatically until you restore the power supply.

4. Then, when you need to use it again the next day (after 6am in my case), just restore it's power, and it will automatically switch itself on.

DONE (at 9am) but it doesn't switch on.

Any hint?

I know. I do turn it off sometimes but not usually.

Anyone else having the same problem or could I just be doing something wrong?

I do the same thing, but all I do is hit my external keyboard or mouse and it turns it on. I never have to open it up. But I am using a thunderbolt monitor
