Apple USB superdrive

i have a macbook pro, dont want to run foul of the region locking, but have a number of R1 (am a UK resident which is R2) dvd's which i would like to be able to play when im away. if i got a USB superdrive and connected it to my MBP would i be able to set this to R1 and leave the drive on the MBP as R2 and not have any region locking issues?

if that is the case how would i go about it?

if there is another drive that someone could suggest?

i have had a search but started gettng confused with talk of vlc and how some people said it still used up there 5 changes
