I have an Ipod 2, can i update software to later versions ?
iPod touch, iOS 2.x
It can be upgraded to 4.2.1

thanks for this. Do you know how I do this - i am okay with technology but finding this one slightly more difficult.

Connect it to your computer and upgrade using iTunes

Tried that but it just says software update complete for 2.0 ??
I suspect you have the 1G (original iPod touch). Thos can only go to iOS 2.x via iTunes and iOS 3.1.3 by

A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X.
The 1G does not have volume buttons on the upper left edge.
