sync smart mailbox with ipad

Hi I have read through some of the discussions relating to this and may have missed something so please bear with me. I would like to be able to synchronise properly the inbox on my Apple Mac and my I pad. In addition I would like to synchronise the smart mail boxes so when I am moblie I can update mails on the Ipad and assign them to the smart mail boxes.

I have noticed that Icloud does have rule based folders, if this is the solution can you copy the rules over or do you manually transcribe them. In this case the Mac inbox is not the same as the ipad inbox, how can I make this happen?

Unfortunately, you cannot sync smart mailboxes. You can only sync standard mailboxes with an IMAP email account.

Thankyou Winston,

I have had a play and have found a rather manually intensive workaround. I export my smartmail boxes locally on the PC and then re import them into Mail which collects them in a folder assigned by mail which contains the smartmail box folder names. The copied smartmail folders now have subfolders called mbox rather than their mails and each of these folders has to be opened to load the mails. These are then retained locally on the Ipad however if I don't do this I need network access to see the folder contents. Not very elegant but I can use the mails in the folders. Its workable (just). I was going to export them to another email account ( using thunderbird & 3rd partyhosting) perhaps this would give me automatic update of the folder and a better solution

Thanks for your help

Your method may become time consuming since emails sent or received after you do this wont be included and you will have to do this regularly to keep up to date.

Provided you are using an IMAP account, another approach you may wish to look at is to have ordinary mailboxes instead of smart ones, put them on your mail server and use rules to automatically move your mail to these, it would mean you only need to set this up once.

Hi Winston,

I have changed my BTaccount to IMAP and have converted some of my categories to ordinary mail boxes and applied rules. I am surprised that Apple don't give more emphasis to this aspect of mailbox management its pretty useful. I have filled some of these folders using "apply rules". I have dragged and dropped my mailboxes from " On My Mac" to ICloud in mail where the mailboxes have been replicated to Icloud proper and I can see them on my IPAD.

I can only see pre-populated mailboxes on ICloud/Ipad. If I populate empty mailboxes after their creation on Icloud the contents update is not automatically carried over. The mechanism to replicated data to the mailboxes on Icloud and IPAD does not work which leads me to believe the IMAP aspect is not working all that well.

I have changed the association to the new BT IMAP on the configuration screen for Icloud but the action seemed a little inconclusive - all I had to do was changed the service name.

Have I missed something obvious?
