iMac Shuts Down without Warning

Hello,

I have an iMac 21.5 inch, Mid 2011 running OS X 10.8.4, 16 GB memory. It has been shutting down without any warning. It seems to happen when iPhoto is open. It also happened with iMove open. Please provide any suggestions that could be helpful. Reports are automatically sent into Apple, but it seems like they are going into a black hole.

Could be a thermal shutdown from overheating. We need to know the temps when it has been running for a while. Get the iStat Pro widget and post the temps in Celsius as well as the fan speeds (in order to rule out a malfunctioning fan.) Yes, the reports to Apple won't do you any immediate good.

When was the last time you vacuumed all of the air intakes, air exhaust, vents , slot, holes and ports all over your the outside of your iMac?

Shutdown your iMac disconnect everything, even power, lay your iMac screen down on a heavy, but soft surface like a heavy towel or blanket and vacuum every opening, slots and ports around your entire iMac. Not just the upper back vent.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to open the access plate where the RAM slots are and do a very light vacuum over that area, as well in case there is dust buildup there, too!

Then reconnect everything, power back up and install a temperature monitor like iStat Pro or iStat menus and report back with the temps.

Good Luck!

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

Hello, I see this is an old thread and I have the same problem. Although the original requestor didn't seem to respond, I hope you don't mind if I ask your assistance?

Here is the post of my panic report. My iMac seems doomed to possibly "die" any moment, but I hope that's not the case. I've had repeated shutdowns lately. I recently (yesterday) upgraded the operating system via the "App Store" update for free. OS X El Capitan. iMac (27-inch, Late 2009). Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Graphic ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB.

Upgrading seemed to help some. Before that, the machine would often get "stuck" and not be able to do anything (spinning rainbow cursor). Then suddenly wake up and be able to resume normally.
