OK. We can't help until you tell us exactly what is happening and if you get any error messages (and what they are.)
external drive has about 12 files to be deleted. I hi-lite one at a time and select empty trash. Acts like it does everything bue when I check it hasn't done anything.
That's not much info. Are the files already in the Trash? If so then you don't select one, you simply select Empty Trash. If you have done this does the Trashcan show it is empty? When you try to empty the trash do you get any error messages - if so, what are they?
If there is a problem with Trash, then try using Trash It! 5.1 to both empty the trash and fix the problem.
