why is my voicemail not working on my iphone 5

upgraded to the iphone 5 today. my voicemail is the old fashioned kind that SHOULD call my mailbox, however it's saying that i don't have a mailbox. this isn't a new line. i was under the impression that new iphone voicemail would be the same if not better than the old. anyone have advise on this?
