Q: Mouse cursor in Word 14.3.5 turns light grey on MacBook Air

Hi everyone,

I got my new 2013 MacBook Air a week ago and I love it

But there's one issue that's pretty annoying: I'm working with huge documents in Word. When I'm trying to chose a word with the trackpad cursor, the cursor turns from black to a very light grey that's hardly visible. I found out, that it has nothing to do with the document itself or the template. It only occurs, when I move the cursor over a text that is formatted italic.

So why do I post this in the MacBook Air-forum? I had a white MacBook before and I never had that issue. Yesterday I tried it on my wife's MacBook Pro - no problem there. Removing the Office suite and reinstalling it didn't help.

Does anyone else have this problem or even a solution?

Thanks

Florian

I will help if you (and others) contact Apple support directly. Since this is an issue with new MacBook Airs, most likely you are within the 90 days of complimentary free support.

Just an update to all having this issue...

I escalated the issue to the engineering team (CASE #469028440). They got a system report file from my computer and I mentioned the date/time when the issue last happened.

Will update once I hear back from engineering. Hopefully a solution will soon be on the way!

I have a similar issue in adobe acrobat 9 (latest). When I use the text select tool and hover over text or image the cursor (a vertical bar) is so light that I can't see it. The cursor is fine (and becomes an arrow) when I reach to the edge.

    Interesting...

I do not have the full Acrobat for Mac though l see online the latest version is XI, not 9... Can you clarify which program you see the issue in?

I wonder if the issue is present in the free Acrobat Reader - can you verify this too?

It is adobe acrobat v9.5.5.. It happened with vanilla acrobat v9.0. So I did all the updates to 9.5.5 but the problem remains.  I don't have version 11. I will try acrobat reader.

Guys and Gals it is not the programs. It is the new hardware and the drivers for it that is causing these problems. Until Apple, or Intel, fixes it there is nothing you can do.

I have same problem with a just purchased MacBook Air running Adobe or Word.  This was not resolved with the MacBook Air (Mid 2013) Software Update 1.0 listed on the side bar.   This is clearly an Apple problem.  Is the only solution to wait for new drivers?

I have just purchased a new MacBook Air for work so I can log in and work when I am away from the office. We use QuarkXpress V9.5 and Word all the time which are fine on my iMac BUT I can't see the **** cursor in either of these programmes on my MacBook Air - really annoying!

I spent a happy hour on the phone to Apple support and got nowhere, the lady I spoke to ended up telling me to reinstall the OS on a brand new machine, really...

Apple please take note of all these posts and get back with an update and solution to have this problem fixed or my next step will be to return my MacBook Air while its only a few days old.

I did have to return my new MacBook Air because of the cursor disappearing in italics. I do alot of writing and editing. Microsoft support was great - 3 days of testing, removing Office 2011 and reinstalling, taking control of my computer (and SEEING the cursor from their remote site while it was invisible to me on my new MacBook Air). So fascinating! Then into the Apple Store where they reinstalled the operating system and when that didn't work, wiped my computer clean! Still, the elusive cursor.

I discovered the bug when I checked every MacBook Air in the store and every one of them had the same problem. Of course by now you know this! But I bought mine the first week it was available.

The Apple reps were great, as usual, but their hands are tied until it becomes a priority for engineering. It will become a priority when more people return their new computers.

Marian33, indeed - we need to keep contacting support with this. I escalated it to engineering (supposedly, case #469028440)  but communication has slowed where I have to make repeated requests to get a reply back. So far looks like the steps they want to pursue is re-install the OS in a partition to verify. The burden and inconvenience is pushed on the customers.

Why aren't the engineers verifying the issue - the repro case is clear. We are getting the run-around and it is frustrating.

Squeeky wheel gets the grease so squeking may be, unfortunately, the last option we have...

Marian33 - to clarify, how did you verify the issue on the MacBook Airs in the store - do they have Office/Word installed?

I am having the same problems with a 2013 MacBook Air on both Word 2011 and the full version of Adobe Acrobat (version 9).  I am considering returning the system (I have an older MacBook Air with a mirror install of the software and I am not getting the problem on the exact files- probably an issue with the new graphics card/drivers).

I created a new partition on my otherwise new MacBook Air and installed a fresh copy of the OS and Office 365. As expected, the issue remains. I provided a report capture in email to Apple Support. In the report I also included a link to this forum thread!

Hopefully, maybe, possibly... there will be some good news in the future for us.

    At the very least:

    - Acknowledgement of the issue

    - Apple taking responsibility for it

    - Confirmation they are working on a fix.

    Fingers crossed...
