Q: Mouse cursor in Word 14.3.5 turns light grey on MacBook Air

Hi everyone,

I got my new 2013 MacBook Air a week ago and I love it

But there's one issue that's pretty annoying: I'm working with huge documents in Word. When I'm trying to chose a word with the trackpad cursor, the cursor turns from black to a very light grey that's hardly visible. I found out, that it has nothing to do with the document itself or the template. It only occurs, when I move the cursor over a text that is formatted italic.

So why do I post this in the MacBook Air-forum? I had a white MacBook before and I never had that issue. Yesterday I tried it on my wife's MacBook Pro - no problem there. Removing the Office suite and reinstalling it didn't help.

Does anyone else have this problem or even a solution?

Thanks

Florian

I upgraded to the most recent version of Adobe Acrobat Pro and have the same cursor problem. And continue to have the problem with Word.  So for me this is still an Apple problem.  I sent a letter to MacWorld - the more of us that do that the sooner Apple will fix this.

I empathise with all of you – I bought a MacBook Air for my son on Monday. I loaded the software on Tuesday morning and discovered that we couldn't see the the cursor in a number of software programmes, especially in Quark. So I was onto Apple Support for the next two days rebooting time after time, holding down all sorts of key configurations, uploading the OS system but they couldn't find out how to get it working. I was finally advised to take it back to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store I bought it from for them to look at. We now have to wait a further 8 days for an appointment – how insulting. If they don't fix it on the spot, I'm having my money back on the grounds of what I purchased was 'not fit for purpose'. Apple should be ashamed of themselves.

Quark says that they are fixing it.  http://forums.quark.com/p/33140/123182.aspx#123182

Now if only Microsoft could do the same with Word and the very faint - impossible to see cursor in italics.

Hi all, same thing here. I had contact with Apple support in Belgium and the Netherlands, so they wanted me to reset the whole system, and so assuming that the problem is with evrybody but Apple. It's like, when you buy a new car, but it doesn't run on certain brands of petrol. How stupid is that! When they develop a Mac, they shouldn't change things like that or at least notify other software companies of this issue! Doesn't Apple test their computers anymore? How is this possible. At Apple support, they even haven't got any computers available, so they say. Duhhhh, … Apple, do something, anything!

What I can't figure out is that I'm running the same licensed Quark, CS5 and Microsoft stuff on an 11inch MacBook Air (2011) also with OS X Lion 10.7.5 and there's no problems. I loaded the software using the same external DVD drive for both Macs. Where's the logic in that? It has to be a problem the latest MacBook Air 13inch.

    Bonkers!

    Hi,

I also had this problem on a brand new MBA 13" until yesterday. If you do the Quark update to version 9.5.3 it should solve it for you.

I had to look twice after i noticed it as i was so used to it being faint and then all of a sudden nice and clear

    Hope this helps...

Yesterday OS X 10.8.5 update doesn't solves the issue.

I called Apple support but no aparent solution.

I returned to Mac buying this MBA, after 3 years in PC. I had a really bad experience with my last Macbook back in 2006 that made me switch back to PC and I promissed myself not comming back. And look at me. I had always way more issues with Mac than with PCs.

Very disapointed with Apple because of this issue.

    Hello,

I just installed Office 2011 14.3.7, following an update which appeared today (Sept 22, 2013). However, I have found that the disappearing-cursor with italic font issue is still present without change, at least on my computer, a June 2013 Macbook Air 13 inch (running 10.8.4).

If anyone has new information or advice about this problem, a post would be appreciated. Thank you.

A possible interesting observation - when I switch between desktops using mission control, often the Word window is not visible so I have trouble choosing the correct desktop.

Also, once I find the correct desktop where Word is present, the Word Window always sits behind any other window I have open. Sometimes clicking on the Word document window does not bring it to the front!

Not sure if this is relevant, but I wonder if it's connected...

I took my new 13 inch Air back to the Apple Store and told them it wasn't fit for purpose and they gave me my money back without any fuss when I told them about the mouse problem. They didn't even try and sell me an alternative model.

I do hope someone is working on this. The MacBook Air is seriously undermined with this silly fault.

Why cant someone explain what is being done to deal with the issue. Maybe it can't be fixed.

It should not be offered for sale in this condition.

I upgraded from acrobat 9 to 11 and the cursor works as epxected now. So i think it has to be a fix from MS.

Hello, pr2459, glad your problems are resolved in Adobe 11. I do not have that program on my computer. Word  documents are the problem for me. Would you know if your updating Adobe (from 9 to 11) had a positive effect on the performance of your WORD program? (Or no connection?)  Would you mind taking a look, if you use Word? The latest version appears to be 14.3.7, but I have the same faint-to-invisible cursor issues as before. Thanks for any further details.

My Adobe worked when I upgraded. It definitely has to be a fix from Microsoft. But Apple better make sure Microsoft will do it as a lot of people are getting really annoyed at their brand new expensive MacBooks that make Word hard to use. Apple also better make sure the people at their genius bars know about this problem. I spent a lot of time reinstalling the OS to try and solve this problem.
