Q: Mouse cursor in Word 14.3.5 turns light grey on MacBook Air

Hi everyone,

I got my new 2013 MacBook Air a week ago and I love it

But there's one issue that's pretty annoying: I'm working with huge documents in Word. When I'm trying to chose a word with the trackpad cursor, the cursor turns from black to a very light grey that's hardly visible. I found out, that it has nothing to do with the document itself or the template. It only occurs, when I move the cursor over a text that is formatted italic.

So why do I post this in the MacBook Air-forum? I had a white MacBook before and I never had that issue. Yesterday I tried it on my wife's MacBook Pro - no problem there. Removing the Office suite and reinstalling it didn't help.

Does anyone else have this problem or even a solution?

Thanks

Florian

This issue doesn't have anything to do with this topic but I though it could be of your interest. https://discussions.apple.com/message/23025980#23025980

After weeks of fealing that my wifi connection at home was not working fine I just realized that the MBA have additional issues related with the wifi connection stability.

Hope you are not experiencing this too.

Same problem here - New Macbook Air, all software the latest. Seen in WORD and Adobe, among others.

Just to add to the mix.  I have the same problem with the cursor dissappearing in Italics Word, but I am using an IMac with Mavericks so it is not just a MBA problem..

This really is a very annoying problem when trying to edit an Adobe Acrobat Document as I am just doing.  Came to this post trying to find a solution, but so far no joy.

The closest to a work-around I have found is to hold down the space bar when moving the cursor.  Then the Hand tool appears with normal contrast.  You can then move it to the point where you want the cursor to be and release the space bar.  Although it is not possible to precisely position the cursor insertion point that way, with a little practice it is close enough for selecting and editing text.

    Hope this helps.

Hi the following has worked for me (I am working with adobe acrobat 9.5.5):

Just go to the "preferences" and then "general," and click in the "make hand tool select text and images." In this way you can always see were the cursor is and even select text. the thing is that I have not tested it with the typewriter, but it is a start.

Thanks ejarambu, that works, unfortunately, the hand tool now disappears the moment I stop moving it.  At least I can bring it back by pressing the space bar.

Unfortunately, Apple is so far clueless for a fix. Their only suggestion when I called this weekend was to either re-set the PRAM or do an OSX re-install. Neither corrected the problem of course. Seems we will need to wait for an OS update.

As long as Apple remains clueless and do not inform people who work at their genius bars of the problem, they are making a lot more people mad at them. I was also told to reinstall the OS which I did. But which was a waste of time. I use Adobe Acrobat Professional and the updated version of that fixed the cursor problem. Microsoft needs to come up with a fix. But Apple needs to know what to tell people when they have the problem.

I am also having the same problem. I had been using an old macbook pro and thought the usability was ridiculous so I switched back to a PC. When it was time to get a new machine, I decided I wanted a sexy little macbook air and assumed that in the 5 years that had passed that the usability would have improved and that all my friends who love macs hadn't actually been brainwashed. I've been dealing with this problem since the start. I assumed it was some sort of glitch in my machine. But look at this, it can't be. This problem is clearly systemic. I write for a living so this is extremely annoying. Fix it apple. Fix it apple. Fix it apple.

Kabury, which version of Acrobat are you using?  I use Acrobat Professional 9, latest update.  Does a newer version not have the problem?  Which one?

I also acknowledge the same problem in Word when trying to select italic text.  Using Word 2008.  Will update help?

I am using Office WORD Mac 20111, v 14.3.9 (the latest) with the same problem. And using Adobe Acrobat Pro X and Adobe Illustrator CS5 - all with the same problems.

Waiting for Apple to make the fix.
