Restoring a contact's erased notes

I accidently erased a contact's notes that contained valuable information. How do I restore them

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I imagine you can't unless you have a backup. If you have a time machine backup you can navigate to it and then restore it. From the backup.
