Q: Help!

I try to playback an avi movies and QuickTime Player won't play it. I get a message saying "could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." Can someone help me to resolve this problem?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Try using VLC Media Player 2.0.7 instead of QT. Or you can convert the file using HandBrake 0.9.9.

Besides VLC which usually will play everything, you can install Perian (no longer being developed, but works) and Flip4Mac (free version). Both of those will allow QuickTime to play various formats.
