Application "bin"

My Mac froze and I had to switch it off in order to do a restart.

Since then, on restart, the first item to open is an application called "bin"

the start of a sample text taken by Activity Monitor:

It refuses to quit, even force quit, even from Activity Monitor

Any ideas?

It's not malware. /bin is not an application, it's a usually hidden folder. See if a PRAM reset fixes this. Shutdown, then immediately at the startup chime hold down Option(alt)-Cmd-P-R, wait for two more chimes, total three, and let go of all the keys to finish booting.

If you're curious to know more about /bin

If the PRAM reset doesn't help, then repair the drive. See

EDIT: Or first see what happens from a Safe Boot, Shift at the startup chime--expect a much longer to time to boot.

No, I'm not talking about the folder "bin"

This is an application, which shows in the dashboard and in Activity Monitor, also the OS calls it an application when it tells me that the "Application bin" stopped the restart.

It shows the possibility of quitting or force quitting, except it just restarts.

On Startup, it loads before the Finder.

By trashing Java, I got rid of it - now I have to find a way to get a functioning Java back

So then I suppose we'd need to know just what was happening when your computer froze and what site you were visiting if Java was enabled. Only a guess, but you might have hit a Java drive-by exploit. And I haven't a clue what the application bin is. Java is a security nightmare.

You should check the Console logs for around the time this happened.

Reinstall the Adobe CS2 stuff or upgrade to a newer version. That's what's causing the issue. On my machine, the only such connector is associated with Mathematica 7.0.1.
