How do I have both the mute off and screen lock rotation off on my iPad
iPhone 4S, iOS 5
You don't want the switch to do anything? Sorry, it has to do one or the other.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

I'm trying to understand. I had my iPad set so that I had sounds in my email, app, games etc AND the screen didn't lock. I've never had the lock icon in the upper right corner before. I don't want to lock rotation,because it's hard to watch Netflix, but I want my sounds and it's not working for me.
Settings>General>Use Side-Switch to:>set it to Rotation Lock.
Use the Side Switch to control rotation.
Use the Mute icon in the Task Bar to control sound (Double-click the Home button and swipe the Task Bar to the right to see Mute icon).
I don';t want to lock the rotation. I want it to be either landscape or portrait, which I had until tonight. I also, at the same time, had game sounds and mail sounds. I don't know how I lost it but I want to get it back.
You have full control whether to lock or unlock using the Side Switch.

Go to General>>Notifications Center, and turn off the sound of all the applications you don't want sound, one by one.

I know that my response is a bit wordy to say the least, but I'm trying to help you understand this, the best way that I know how, and I thought that by posting a screenshot of how I have my iPad set up for the side switch and systems sounds, it might help as well.
Take another "fresh start" approach. Close all the apps in the recents tray and reboot your iPad just so that in the extremely unlikely event, there is something corrupting or interfering with what you are trying to do, we can eliminate that.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus ➖ sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Close every app in the recents tray. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Now go to Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Lock rotation. Tap that and use your side switch for locking and unlocking the screen orientation. Rest it by flipping the side switch to see the orange dot above the switch. If you see that orange dot, then you did flip the switch. Now do you see the lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen? Does the screen stay in in the same orientation when you rotate the iPad? If it does, then the setting is correct and the switch is working as it should. Flip the switch the other way and make sure that the lock icon disappears and rotate the iPad to make are that the screen is moving into the correct orientation.
Now double tap the home button. Swipe to the right in the recents tray at the bottom. Do you see the speaker icon on the left? It should be there. Tap it once. Do you see the words "Mute On" appear on screen below the playing controls for the Music App? Tap it again and see if shows "Mute Off". You should also see a line through the speaker icon when the sound is muted and the line should go away, when the sound is unmuted. Tapping that speaker icon will now control your system sounds like email notifications, app sounds, etc. Make sure that the sound is unmuted and then tap the home button once or just tap above the screen somewhere to get out of the recents tray.
There is a pretty simple way to achieve what you want to achieve and that is to reset all settings and let you get a fresh start with these settings. But you still need to understand how it works or what went wrong or it will crop up again and you really should know how to deal with it.
