I've often notice an activity progress bar in the lower left corner of the mail program running and indicating that it's downloading over 10,000 messages. I never see these actually show up in any mailbox, but I can't help but wonder what's going on. Does anyone understand this?

Rebuild the mailbox ...
Launch the Mail app.
Select a mailbox then from the Mail menu bar click Mailbox > Rebuild
It can take a few minutes.
