Q: Why won't the airplay icon appear

Just got an Apple TV, but I'm not having success playing videos shot on my iphone5

to the tv over AirPlay. Is there some way I need to turn this on?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.2

I'm thinking the router has to be involved because my iPhone, MacBook Air, and iMac all on the same network have had trouble detecting each other for screen sharing and iTunes home sharing as well. I'm going to try to reset the router next.

    There is a setting on the AppleTV to turn on AirPlay. I would check that first. Also the two devices must be on the same wifi network.

     

    Now I now from personal experience that some routers can create problems for AirPlay. Until recently I had one that unfortunately needed to be reset regularly for my iPad to detect the AppleTV. It could also be that the router's firewall is blocking the signal, in which case you will need to fiddle around with those settings. (if so, consult your router's manual for details)
