iPhoto 9.4.3 crash on open 10.8.4

I'm getting "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" every time i try to open iPhoto

I've tried deleteing the preferences stored at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto, deleting the cache file at ~/Library/Caches and using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library but none of the above have made a difference

The crash report i receive is as follows:

Does iPhoto launch, when you create a new iPhoto Library and import a few images?

Launch iPhoto while holding down the options-key ⌥ and select "Create New".

Does that work, or can you not even create a new library?

If you cannot create a new library, does iPhoto launch from a different user account?

On the long shot that it's a damaged preference file that is causing the crash try the following: Try the following:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).

User uploaded file

or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
folder

User uploaded file

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

Thanks for this helpful list of things to check.

I upgraded from 10.6 to 10.8 a few weeks ago and this is the first time I have opened iPhoto. Long ago I transferred the iPhoto library onto an external disk, which has always worked flawlessly.

The User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder did not even exist on my drive, clearly a feature that the upgrade did not handle well. Not terribly impressive on Apple's part.

I have deleted the od pref and cache files, but iPhoto still crashes when I try to open its library on the external disk.

So, an issue after the upgrade 10.6 to 10.8 using an external disk to store photos.

Is this worth reporting to Apple?

Yes, that works.

I suppose from there I can import the photos from the old library.

Another path would be to ditch iPhoto altogether and try another app.

Curiously enough the plist mentioned by Old Toad was not in the location shown. This may be a legacy of 10.5 and 10.6 which I was running earlier on this computer.

Thanks for continuing dialogue.
