OK..  This is my current situation.

I need to back up and restore my phone. I lost my password.

I have two options on iTunes. back up to computer. backup to icloud

If i back up to my computer, while restoring it, it is asking for the password

If i back up to icloud, can i restore it without this authentication? ( I have to try now)

If icloud backup and restore works, can I back up to icloud, then set up my phone as new device and then remove this encrypt option for computer backup and then restore from icloud back up?

    For the last time:

If you can't remember it & want to remove it, you'll have to delete your existing backups & restore the phone as a new device. Your data will be unrecoverable.

I don't know how clearer I can be.

    Good luck.

You are correct on that wjosten.  What I was saying was for in the future.  If he wants to prevent this from happening in the future, he will have uncheck the encryption option.  He is currently unable to recover the data. However, he can prevent this from happening in the future.   That is all I was saying.  Venkat491, I hate to say that you have lost your current data, but this doesn't have to happen again.. Good luck doll.

    Heyyyyy,

I got it. It works. May be I cannot restore from iTunes if I lost the encrypted password. But iPhone has an option from the device to backup to the iCloud. We can backup all the data ( yes!!! everything...) to iCloud.

Once you have a new device, while setting up the device, just restore from the iCloud. Tats it....

Vasu - you saved me!  The "experts" who said it couldn't be done were WRONG!

I backed up my old phone to the cloud (yes, this did mean buying more space, but I was slightly desperate).  Then I was able to set up my new 5s from the cloud.

    Thank you so much Vasu!!!

After trying EVERYTHING in the post(s) I was finally able to restore my 3GS back up to my iphone 5.  I had to back it up to the cloud.  After it was done, I plugged in my 5 and it started to restore the old backup to the new phone.  Like everyone else, I do not recall entering a password for the encrypted back up but I know next time to pay CLOSE attention when I am backing up my phone.
