Unable to back up (see previous pages) when using Safari

After installing IOS 10.8.4 I find that as I go forward, moving from page to page in the Safari browser, I am unable to back up more than a page and have to totally shut down Safari and start again. Is there a setting that can fix this or is just part of the problems with "Mountain Lion"?
