Why can't some Hotmail emails be deleted from phone?

I can't delete some Hotmail emails from my iPhone (iPhone 5, iOS6.1.4). It doesn't happen with all Hotmail emails. It appears that this only happens with Hotmail emails that have been on the iPhone, opened on the iPhone but not deleted via the iPhone, and then deleted via my computer by accessing my Hotmail account. The emails remain in the Hotmail account on the iPhone and when I try to delete them, via "edit" and deleting selected or swiping and choosing "delete," I receive an error pop up that says "Unable to Move Messages The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash." The email will temporarily be removed, but it will then reappear. Anyone have a clue on how to fix this? Thanks.

"Unable to move message to folder "Trash" because the folder does not exist"

Note: This should not affect MobileMe accounts.

Resolution

To resolve this issue go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > [affected account name] > Advanced > Deleted Mailbox on iPhone or iPod touch.

If "On the Server" is an option, select Trash below that (or select Deleted Items or Deleted Messages). Otherwise, select Trash located under "On My iPhone". Once the Deleted Mailbox has been set, tap Advanced and then press the Home button to return the Home screen.

If the Deleted Mailbox is already set to Trash, please follow these steps:

  1. Tap another folder such as Spam under the "On the Server" section
  2. Tap Advanced.
  3. Tap Deleted Mailbox, then set it to Trash located under On My iPhone.
  4. Tap Advanced.
  5. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.

I had the same issue. Email from April thru June would not go to trash. I trashed them on my iPad and Mac desktop, but could not get off the iPhone 4S .

I deleted the affected hotmail account from my iPhone . Powered off the iPhone . Waited a few minutes and powered up again. The email are all gone, the account works fine now.

Caution! The saved documents in email folders will be empty on the iPhone . But because the account is always synced via iCloud , the documents are still available on the iPad and Mac desktop.

So far so good

TeeKnows - I dont think we are talking about the same issue. You are describing when folder Trash doesnt exist. However, the error message being discussed (and I have same exact issue) is that HotMail client on IOS device indicates that it simply cannot move the message to folder trash. From my own testing, I know that if you move the message back from deleted status (or archived to a folder) in HOTMAIL web client back to Inbox, you can then delete the message on the IOS client and it will be removed from HOTMAIL inbox folder. My suspicion is that root cause of this problem relates to how POP3 mail works - not actually a bi-directional sync.

I had this problem and was able to use you information after deleting the email account from my phone, restarting the phone, and than re-adding the email account back.
before that, none of the "on this server" was an option at all. however once I re-added the email. All that was there now.
I think it may have to do with the new apple 6 and iwatch update stuff
