Q: How Do I Disable Remote Management and Enable Screen Sharing?

Sorry. Let me begin by saying i'm runnung the non-server version of 10.8.4, but I thought folks here might have a solution.

I am connected to a headless remote Mac Mini. Under Sharing in the System Preferences both Remote Login and Remote Management are checked though Remote Mangement is "grayed out". I would like to disable Remote Management and enable Screen Sharing.

Currently the Screen Sharing checkbox is "grayed out". When I click on it, I get the following message: "Screen Sharing is currently being controlled by the Remote Management service."

To access the remote server I Connect to Server (command-k) vnc://IPnumber

I would like just Remote Login and Screen Sharing enabled and Remote Management disabled.

Does anyone know the steps for me to accomplish this goal remotely?

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

I'm not entirely clear on what's happening here.

You're connected to and seeing the Remote Management setting on the system that is running OS  X Server?  If so, have you tried connected to the target Mac Mini with Screen Sharing?  (That should work.  With OS X Server, that Remote Management stuff is the screen sharing setting.)

OS X client does include Screen Sharing that works with OS X Server if you're not already using that or Apple Remote Desktop (ARD); it's available via Finder and various other paths, and I usually pin Screen Sharing (or ARD, if that's around) into the Dock on the logins I use for remote management.

If you've tried Screen Sharing and it's not working, was there was an error?  If so, could you post any diagnostics or messages that might have been reported?

Is it possible that access to the TCP port 5900 screen sharing port is being blocked by a firewall in your network?

You can turn off Remote Management by logging into the system via SSH and using the Kicktstart command with the appropriate syntax:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370

You then should be able to activate screen sharing via the following command:

sudo defaults write /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist com.apple.screensharing -dict Disabled -bool false

    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.screensharing.plist

though I have not tried that command, which is from another web site, to confirm that the syntax is correct. As always, make sure you have the system backed up in case something goes wrong.

    Regards.

I need help with the same problem. Screen Sharing was working fine to connect with my headless MacMini. Dummy me - while logged in, I went to the System Sharing Preferences and checked Remote Management - not realizing that would disable Screen Sharing. NOW, I can still connect to my MacMini for file sharing BUT the Screen Sharing option is disabled. Unfortunately it is way in the back of a closet and almost impossible to get to to connect to a screen.

I am a terminal dummy. Please help me understand your instructions.

You then should be able to activate screen sharing via the following command:

*where do I type these commands? I can't launch the terminal on the headless Mini with no screen share and If I launch terminal it will send instruction to my MBPro. I don't understand. Can you please list dummy instructions, step by step? Thanks.
