I have a 27" iMac (Late 2009) and would like to use it as an external display for my Dell laptop with ony mini HDMI and VGA video outputs.
Has anyone successfully done it before?

No Dell products are listed as compatible

I have and I have tried it. Please re-read my question. Have you tried the configuration yourself?
It only works if you have a MacBook and iMac.
Does your Dell have a Mini Display port, that is the port you use. Sorry you are having trouble but it works fine if you have a MDP and a 2009 or 2010 27" iMac. If you still have difficulty bring the whole setup to your local Apple Store or AASP and they will show you how to make it work.
Thanks. I only have mini HDMI & VGA ports. Think I'll just have to take it to the store.
