How to get Java 1.6 running on 10.5.8?

Hi, I'm using a G5 running 10.5.8 and just updated to Vuze 5.0.0.0. According to Vuze I'm on Java 1.5.0_30. Although Vuze runs, it complains that some of it's plugins need a newer version of Java. So I downloaded JavaForMacOSX10.5Update6.pkg

However, when I try to install it, it says there is already a newer version of Java installed.

How can I install Java 1.6? 😕

Hello Leon,

We're out of luck, Intel 64 Bit OSes only...

This release of J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 supports all Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs. Java SE 6 is available on 64-bit, Intel-based Macs only.

Maybe it's just us, but.. I have this with just about all software of the last decade. For example: I used to work freelance with Flash a lot and it got a totally new scripting language TRICE between 2000 and 2006.

Sure, the original scripting was limited, but three, increasingly, quite complicated scripting languages in 6 years was a complete overkill for about 99% of all the Flash movies ever made.

Same with Photoshop, Illustrator, Word.. What is added that was really a serious change since the early versions? They just keep on changing it, so they can sell new suites, often breaking things, like compatibility, in the process.
