Incorrect iCloud storage estimate

I am trying to back up my camera roll to iCloud. The only app that is "on" to be backed up is the camera roll. I have 5.0 GB of available storage. My phone says that the camera roll should take up 3.6 GB. However, the "Next Backup Size" is 5.3 GB and the phone is telling me that I need an additional 315 MB to back up the phone. Why? The amount of storage needed is less than the amount of storage available, so it should work. Yet, it's not. Help please.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

Hey sarahrdevo,

Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It is important to note that iCloud is backing up much more than what is displayed on the Backup Options page. Here are some examples:

You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:

- Photos and videos in the Camera Roll

- Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)

- App data

- Home screen and app organization

- Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)

- Ringtones

- Visual Voicemails

Clearing some of your Messages (especially MMS messages) or Voicemails may resolve the issue. However, if you determine you need more iCloud storage, you can purchase additional iCloud storage from your iOS device, Mac, or PC. Alternatively, you can also backup to your computer with iTunes:

Thanks,
