new mac user needs help

I have been creating different user accounts (as the whole family has been using admin).

My son uses minecraft and his saved data would not work in another user, so i started tinkering . . . .

I have caused a problem in my admin account (various applications wont work, mail, skype, spotify, no sure what else yet) i think it was caused by typing in terminal, not sure exactly what i typed, not sure how to look at terminal history, is that possible?

I think it has changed my permissions.

Is there any risk of loosing valuable files (photos and music mainly) changing sharing and permissions settings for different users?

If i repair permissions in disk utility do i run the risk of loosing valuable files?

Help!!

Thanks very much Andy, these are all the commands that have been made, are any of these likely to cause permission issues?

No, and do note the difference between ~ which is short for a user 'home' folder and -

did you enter any commands in other user accounts ?

if not, please describe what happens when you try the apps which are a problem, and include any console messages from the time you try. Do the apps behave for other users ?

I have subsequently solved the minecraft problem by copying a folder from the admin account to the new account.

The problems in the admin account are in mail, nothing happens when i clicked on mail icon, although the menus arrive at top of the desktop. I have been checking the folders and files in application support, mail, and they all seem to be set to read only, will it hurt to change them to read & write ?

Skype says,

Can't open the lock file at /Users/briplumb/library/Application Support/Skype/Skype.pid. The file exists but you have not enough priveleges to write to it.

check permissions and lauch Sype again.

Spotify says,

Warning!

Unable to initialize the storage of temporary files.

I have change permissions for some folders, and there enclosed, in iphoto library and some of the minecraft files in application support. Perhaps they have affected the other permissions?

Thanks again for your help
