This is why before doing any updates you need to create a physical hard copy back up of your contacts so that just in case it all goes poof you have a paper copy from which you can re-enter the contact info. go to icloud.com and log into your apple id. go to contacts and see what is there. If there's nothing there then you must find a back up of your contacts elsewhere. If there is something there then you can click the gear in the bottom left select all gear again and click print from there you can create a PDF and save an Adress Book to your computer. To get the contacts back into icloud you would have to manually re-type them all in... This is the last resort of course, what you really should be doing on a regular basis is syncing mail contacts and calendars in itunes with outlook or windows contacts (on the windows side) or syncing with address book on the mac. You can set that up on the info tab with your device plugged in using usb. create regular offline backups. that way if icloud does happen to dissapear your info you do have an offline copy to which you can refer. I'm a child of the digital age. I will say this though. Paper and pen still works. Do not underestimate the power of paper and pen or other "low" tech solutions.

other good places to look for contacts are: Outlook, windows contacts, Address book, Yahoo contacts, Gmail contacts. Generally every email provider has some kind of contact system too because it helps you the user enter emails quickly and easily by associating a name with an email so that way you don't have to remembereveryone
