"Home" icon not functioning

I lost the ability to use the "Home" icon when I tab on it to access my iCloud Folders. The only files I have access to are the ones that I used recently in the "Status" icon. That won't work if the file I needed aren't any of the ones that I have used recently. I thought that I can defeat this problem by using the "Open" function while I am in either the Word / Excel, or PowerPoint application. That's simple enough, except I am unclear where to find "Open" file function in the Menu. So, (1): Any help in making the "Home" icon work will be great, and (2) anyone can show me where to find the "Open" file function in the Menu bar? Thanks!
