Q: Time capsule not found anymore by iMac

Hello  all.

I have had a 2TB Time capsule for about 1 year.

The set up I have is a cable ISP modem feeding the LAN into the Time Capsule, and I have the TC feed, by Ethernet cables, the iMac (Mountain Lion)  and 2 Windows PCs.

I use the TC to back up the iMac, and also add another WifI hotspot for that side of the house.

The back ups seem to work,  and the wifi from the TC too, is strong and most welcome in that part of the house.

However, even though the internet is working on the Mac and PCs, when I run Airport Utility on the Mac - it says that the device is not found, and says that this TC used to be part of the network. Although there is a greyed out picture of it.

Interestingly when I run Airport utility on my IOS devices in the house all looks good and the TC is there with a nice green light next to it.

When I disable the wifi on the iMac , the picture of the TC disappears altogether.

The reason I want to sort this out as I want to set up a network printer by USB into the TC ; but it keeps saying error, I wonder if it is something to do with this greyed out issue.

So I have tried powering off and powering on again; but nothing changed.

Ideas are welcome to get my TC showing in full technicolour again will be most welcome.

Thanks in advance

If you upgraded to the new 6.3 airport utility when it got pushed out.. then you might need to use IPv6 with Local-Link connection.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597

Apple belatedly realised something was amiss.

    No luck??

Then what firmware is the TC running?

I would go back to 7.6.1

And I would install 5.6 airport utility

How to load 5.6 into ML.

    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.

    2. Download and install unpkg.

    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.

You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

For screen shots see this post.

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0

Things suddenly could start working again.

A factory reset of the TC.. will not harm any files on the hard disk.. and use all SMB type names..

That is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

That covers everything.. TC name, wireless name/s and hard disk share name.

Delayed going to work for a few minutes, and tried the IPv6 with Local-Link connection, suggestion.

I had to close Airport Utility and reopen it again, to get the TC is all it's glory appear.

So it worked - without too much pain.

Thanks again for your help in this.
