I get the spinning beach ball for up to a half hour before booting, and even then can't log in. I booted with an external snow leopard OS and disk utility passed on all volumes. Can I use standard fsck and tools like DiskWarrior and Drive Genius to repair the disk?

I'd encourage creating an external backup before proceeding, whether using Disk Utility (DU) while booting from the recovery partition (if your OS X version supports the recovery partition), or from a separate OS X install on an external disk.  Repairs can sometimes make the corruptions worse, and can sometimes push a marginal disk over into full failure.   Once the backup has completed, then try the recovery tools; a DU repair or equivalent.
