You should NOT be troubleshooting a few days old Mac.

You have 14 days from the purchase date to return with no questions asked. Suggest that you take full advantage of this. Call AppleCare ASAP!

I agree with Boomer about have Apple deal with the issue via Apple's Express Lane, but do note that these might be the culprits:

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember. See

The Lacie components could be causing the kernel panics due to:

"migrated all of my data and applications from my old imac"

If the old iMac is running a previous OS X, then the Lacie software for your new iMac running Mountain Lion v10.8 may need updating.

I bought my iMac 27" 2 days ago. I used Migration Assistant and a LACIE backup disk from my MacBook Pro (early 2011 model running 10.7.5) to transfer over my data and applications. Now every time the computer goes to sleep and I wake it up I get the following error message "the computer had to be restarted because of a problem". I pasted the error report below

Thanks baltwo for your response! I actually think mine may be a hardware issue after all. I did a bunch of troubleshooting. I deleted the user account I set up, erased the HD, and reinstalled OS X and the same issue persisted. I don't think I couldn't have gotten a cleaner slate than that.

Good news is I'm within the 14 days of purchase so I am going to exchange it. I'm wondering if I should return it though, a little disconcerting to have issues with a machine from the beginning.

I'd return it. Just make sure you wipe your presonal data off the machine. Keychains, Mail, and Safari stuff come to mind.
