I will be in an app like facebook , email, or safari and all of a sudden I'm kicked out like if I pressed the home button but I did not .
Is this common or should I be worried . Also my volume will not work at time on certain apps and if I hit the home button to get out and go back in , it will work . ??

Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

Also consider Deleting any Apps you have Purchased / Downloaded but you now never use..
If necessary...
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Restore “...
Its' very basic, but Have you restarted/reset your device? Sounds like it could be a memory issue.

I let my battery get to like 3% or so and I completely turn off and charge it . I also reset when it will freeze and have had to reset already . Wanted to see if this was common or not ? but it seems like i get a lot of issues . I don't have many apps either only like page and 1/2. if that daughters ipod has more apps than me LOL .
This has been happening to me as well. I just got my iPad 4th gen less than a week ago, and I'm getting returned to the home screen at random, too. I've done the reset thing, but that doesn't seem to fix it. It does, however, fix the "screen jerk" issue when in the App Store.
