Thanks. That is what I have. Is there any way to download previous purchases from itunes, that I made from a different mac, onto this imac? maybe a way around icloud?
You need to manually move them from the different Mac or any backups of it.

The macbook that I used to make the purchases in question is now dead, so I can't retrieve them that way. I can still make itunes purchases from my imac power pc, in fact most of my music purchases are on this comp. but I can't download previous purchases onto this one without upgrading itunes, but I can't go higher than itunes 9.2.1. Is there any other way? Thanks for your help.
Go to a machine with a newer OS and iTunes 10 or 11, redownload them to it, creating a new iTunes library if needed, move the files to your computer as you would any other, and drag them into the open iTunes application window.
Rented movies can't be moved this way.
