I have read the Comunities - done all troubleshooting - reinstalled iTunes 2X - very frustrated and want to return device.  i hav espent 2 weeks trying to get this work.  The device in iTunes doesn't give me "sync" option.  When the ipod box comes up when connected in itunes,  click on it and it goes away.  THe nano says syncing and finishes and there is no music.  Only thing I have not tried is the Security softwear on my PC, as Apple suggests.  I am not too techy - Apple has instructions - want to see if anyone else has this issue before i try to disable the security softwear.  Is it worth going back to Apple store?
