Q: Only one Airport Extreme shows in Utility, trying to set roaming network.

I had one Airport Extreme for about a year, wifi did not reach as far as I needed it to in the house.  I purchased the latest generation AX on Friday, and it is currently working on it's own, but I can't seem to get the second, older AX to appear in Airport Utility.  I tried extending the wifi network first, but it would not connect.  Then I finally resorted to placing the older AX next to the new AX and tried to set up a roaming network - still not visible in utility.

Is this because I had the older AX set up initially as a stand alone wifi base station?  Do I need to disconnect the newer AX, put the old AX in place and change settings first?  I have followed prior discussions about making sure that both stations were set with identical names for the network.

Xfinity ====> Aris Converter Modem ======> AX (newer model) ======> AX (one or two years old)

Have tried:

1.) Powering down both AX and Cable Modem (removed battery), then restart cable modem and wait, start new AX and wait (green light and works), old AX and wait, flashing Amber, does not show on utility.

So you are using airport utility on win7 PC.. do you have an iOS device you can use airport utility in??

This could be difficult.. without using the newest utility and ipv6 it is hard to see the whole network.

For now.. I would setup this as roaming network.. but do the setup on the old Extreme in isolation to the new one.

It is simple to set it in bridge mode and setup wireless. Same wireless name same security setting and password. update it then plug by ethernet into the new TC. That should be able to work fine.

Great suggestion on using the iOS and airport utility, much less walking back and forth!  Still not able to see the second AX on the utility.

I took the new AX out of line, put the older in place and tried that one - still works great, confirmed that the network name and security is the same, but not sure on the process to set it up in bridge mode.

In order to know which AX was which, I had called them different names. Same network and security, but different names for the device so I could tell them apart on the Windows version of Airport Utility.  Would I have to call each device the same name as well?  Doesn't seem likely, but sometimes logic does not always apply.

I do really want a roaming network, as I think it would provide the best downloads and internet connection at the entertainment center.  That, and I installed so much Cat5 wire in this house when it was built because wifi routers just weren't practical and the cost was prohibitive.

When you say "do the setup on the old Extreme in isolation to the new one." do you mean taking the new version off line and installing the old one in place by itself while doing the update changes? I did try that and "de-selected" the box for extending the network by wifi.  So now both devices have the option for extending the network unchecked and should have identical setups, but still can't "see" the second router in utility when I put them back together and the second router flashes orange.

Roaming is easy.. IMHO much easier than setting up wireless extend.

Read the apple document to start with.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260

You setup both units.. the base unit must have a different name.. but the wireless name is identical.

    So you have AXnew

As a base name that is good.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric and obvious which one it is .

    You have AXold

Both should have the same name for wireless. Again short no spaces and pure alphanumeric. It just works better.

    Both create a wireless network.

Both have the same security setting and password.

    AXnew is in router mode.

AXold is in bridge mode.. that is router bridge. ie.

You can set each one up in total isolation.. plug it into the computer or use wireless.. but no network connection. Start from full factory reset.

Thank you very much - seems that the key was to factory reset both, and have completely isolated during the changes!
