I'm trying to save some pictures to my desktop but everytime I try to do so I get the following error message: 'An errror occurred while trying to save the picture. Delte some unneeded files on your hard disk, or try saving to a different location.' I have 400 GB of space left, and am using the newest OS. Any ideas?

I'd first try testing in a new user account, and in safe mode. See the steps under "If the issue occurs in various applications, or in Mac OS X," in this article:
